Sažetak
According to the classical definition, zeolites are crystalline alumosilicate materials with well-defined system of channels and cages with size below 2 nm. Nowadays it is extended to all materials possessing structure features typical for zeolites: tetrahedra of oxygen atoms bonded to central T atom (T = Si, Al, Zn, Ge, P, Ga, …) connected via vertices thus forming porous framework. Combining possible bonding angles between the tetrahedra and considering various energy restrictions, the number of hypothetical zeolite structures exceeds two millions. Zeolites are widely applied in numerous fields of human activities owing to their unique set of properties ensuing from their chemical composition and framework structure. Control of these two determinants enables the preparation of materials having properties necessary for desired performance in particular application. Nevertheless we are far from understanding the basic processes of zeolite formation that would allow the synthesis of zeolites with predetrmenied capabilities. Accordingly, further research on the mechanisms of zeolite formation as well as their framework control is needed to meet the growing demands on zeolite-containing materials. It has been observed that certain building units (structural elements) are formed exclusively or more frequently in the presence of a particular atom than when other elements are employed. Moreover, when performing synthesis the same precursor can yield different final products when some reaction parameters are changed. The impact of framework cations on the type of zeolite structure formed will be exemplified by the synthesis of RUB-17, an RSN-type Zinc-silicate. The structure directing and stabilizing effect of Zn on the zeolite framework will be discussed. Further the impact of Zn on the electronic structure of RSN-type material will be discussed with the prospect to be used as semiconducting material.
