Sažetak
Various collocational analyses of target-domain words reveal that a (limited) number of metaphorical collocations can be expected for emotion-related target concepts (e.g. eruption of anger ; cf. e.g. Stanojević, Tralić and Ljubičić 2014). However, although nations may be metaphorized in different ways (e.g. as buildings, families, living organisms ; for an overview see Šarić 2015), the collocational analysis of nacija ‘nation’ in the Croatian online corpus hrWaC does not reveal many (potentially) metaphorical examples. Do the metaphors related to nacija remain “hidden” among the less characteristic examples or is the cultural model of nacija relatively non-metaphorical? To find the answer, I performed two collocational analyses and a discursive analysis of Croatian online communication, to obtain a global (using the 1 billion hrWaC corpus) and a local view (performing a collocational and a discursive study of the forum.hr domain). Metaphors were identified using the MIV procedure (Cameron 2003) and grouped, and a discursive analysis of topics was performed to reconstruct the cultural model. As for linguistic metaphors, the results show that nacija is primarily used in personifications/metonymies (e.g. nacija je odahnula ‘the nation gave a sigh of relief’). The discursive analysis revealed that the discussions centered on nation formation (e.g. koje će se nove nacije formirati? ‘which new nations will be formed?’), its defining features (language, economy, religion, birth, state), purity (čišćenje nacije od… ‘cleansing the nation of’), but also included “simple objective” references to the nation as a pre-existing group (hrvatska nacija ‘Croatian nation’). Overall, this suggests that the cultural model hinges on seeing nacija as a group of people brought together by a common element, which means that the cultural model is non-metaphorical. Linguistic metaphors are sanctioned by the non-metaphorical elements of the cultural model or discursive contestation, rather than being uniquely metaphorical. References Cameron, Lynne. 2003.
