Sažetak
This presentation emphasize geopolitical importance of the Dubrovnik Republic during the Cyprus war, the Cretan and Morean war, when interest of the relevant factors was in a special way focused toward the Eastern Adriatic coast and it`s hinterland, representing a real challenge for Dubrovnik diplomacy preserving territorial integrity of this fragile Republic. Supporting any of the opposing parties in this Christian- Ottoman clash, could be disastrous for Dubrovnik, so, extraordinary diplomatic effort had to be done in order to defense its neutral status, equally with the Ottoman rulers, the Dubrovnik political suzerain, as well with Christian sovereignties. Various initiatives were threatened not only by the Ottomans, but also by the Venetian Republic, which sought to compromise neutrality of its main Adriatic commercial rival, especially during the so-called Holy Leagues. In fact, Dubrovnik Republic could remain neutral only by securing influential and relevant political patrons, who were able to recognize the importance of Dubrovnik geopolitical position. The persistence of it`s borders was in the interest of both sides – Dubrovnik authorities, as much as their political patrons - the Ottomans, Spain and Rome, in the 16th century – along with more relevant Austrian Habsburgs in the 17th century. Dubrovnik economic and logistical capabilites, which were diametrically opposed to political relevance of this fragile Eastern Adriatic Republic, could be used within foreign policy of these great powers, only protecting the viability of Dubrovnik. This resulted in inviolability of the Dubrovnik state borders, precisly in those same moments when the Dalmatian Ottoman- Venetian frontier drastically changed.
