Sažetak
Interest in practical crystal engineering is driven by the fact that performance and properties of solid materials can be directly modified and controlled by specific features of the 3-D assembly of molecules/ ions that form a particular material. To date, the organic solid-state has provided a number of productive strategies for non-covalent synthesis by identifying synthons that provide effective avenues for supramolecular synthesis. However, reliable synthetic strategies that employ a combination of coordinate-covalent bonds and relatively weak and readily reversible hydrogen bonds have not received anywhere near the same attention. In order to explore possible transferability of specific supramolecular motifs from organic to metal-organic systems as a way of developing robust synthetic strategies of metal-containing architectures, we have carried out a structural examination of a series of acac-based metal(II) complexes with pyridine-type ligands decorated with the oxime moiety. Our results demonstrated that by carefully fine tuning the strength of competing hydrogen-bond acceptors and donors it was possible to obtain the intended oxime×××oxime motif which, in turn, delivered the targeted supramolecular assembly. The experimental efforts were complemented by an in-depth theoretical analysis of molecular electrostatic potential surfaces and interaction energies in order to rationalize the observed structural features.
