Sažetak
Micron- and submicron-sized mineral particles represent the most reactive sediment phases and are considered responsible for transfer and removal of contaminants in the aquatic environments. They have an important role in biogeochemical processes in modern sediments and soils, which makes research of their nature, fate and behaviour of considerable interest. Surfaces of mineral particles in natural environments are mostly hindered by organic and inorganic compounds occurring in the form of surface coatings. Their presence can have various effects on particle reactivity and stability, influencing also the fate of contaminants bound to mineral surfaces. Accordingly, this study aims to investigate the influence of naturally occurring organic and inorganic coatings present on the surfaces of mineral particles on the distribution and accumulation of trace elements in different marine sediments. Distribution of elements in the bulk surface sediment and the isolated clay fraction, consisting mostly of submicron-sized particles, were investigated by high resolution inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (HR ICP-MS) before and after removal of organic matter and Fe and Mn oxides/oxyhydroxides. The results obtained showed that distributions of As, Mo, Cu and Co were significantly affected by the removal of Fe and Mn oxides/oxyhydroxides indicating their importance in the biogeochemical cycling of these elements in the marine environment. The removal of organic matter from mineral surfaces resulted in significant decrease in concentrations of Mo, U, Sb and Cu in anoxic marine sediments, indicating that organic matter has important role in accumulation of these elements under suboxic and anoxic conditions.
