Sažetak
Present – day libraries, especally public ones are facing many challenges. The development of democracy and its core values in a modern society has created a new background in which public libraries receive a significant and active role and therefore a special social responsibility. Code of Professional Ethics is a set of ethical standards which governing the conduct of a profession. It should be an expansion of horizons of ethics in the application of specific ethical standards that help facilitate personal responsibility and accountability to the dilemmas that beyond individual morality. As there is a strong interrelation Call a professional and ethical behavior and action, not possible no profession without ethics or ethics without professionalism. In a new changing environment in countries in transition, librarians should preserve the values they consider as their own. Librarians today can not always give simple answers to simple questions like: how to preserve the user’s privacy, or what in fact privacy in libraries is? What are the privacy data librarians should protect and preserve. What is, also, a real border between the privacy and public in libraries ? We consider that the answers to these questions have to be sought in the Code of Ethics for Librarians We have also mentioned what it could be classified in the private sphere that librarians must respect (the questions: '' What do you like to read?’’ or '' Are you a member of the library '' ... ) The conclusion is that many questions can not give a final answers , but the Code of Ethics for Librarians should be a key document that sets standards and policies providing the framework for possible answers .
