Sažetak
The paper describes the semantic features and etymology of Slavic attestations in medieval Croatia from the oldest Latin inscriptions in the late ninth century to the end of the eleventh century. Although many of the lexemes attested belong to Slav-ic onomastics, there are also several appellatives that might be significant to the Slavic philology and historiography. All of them were attested in medieval Latin sources prior to the beginning of Old Church Slavonic literacy in Croatia, which began in the late eleventh century, so at least some of them can be defined as some of the oldest of all Slavic attestations. Common Slavic lexemes such as potok' ‘creek’ were certainly inherited from the Proto-Slavic period, while many others should be regarded as calques created according to the Romance and Germanic models. The best example for this is word gra(dь)ščik' ‘castellan’, whose derivation was probably in-spired by the Romance title castellano. Using the comparative method, the authors have attempted to uncover the derivation, semantic development and sociolinguistic function of these appellatives in the context of Romano- Slavic bilinguism in medieval Croatian society.
