Sažetak
The studies of youth politics in developed democracies point to young people’s strong detachment from formal politics but positive tendencies of practicing and accepting unconventional political activities. Therefore, the definition of active citizenship and active citizens is modified accordingly, encompassing postmodern forms of citizenship which also include “monitorial” or “stand-by” citizens - those who are not actively involved in politics in the conventional sense but are interested in politics, politically efficacious and declare readiness to participate in political activities (Schudson 1999 ; Hooghe and Dejaeghere 2007 ; Amnå and Ekman 2013). However, in a post- socialist society such as Croatia, young people’s (political) socialisation was characterized by a turbulent democratic transition and primarily by the process of re-traditionalisation, which consequently favoured a more pronounced acceptance of a traditionalist orientation amongst the youth in the sense of expressing national exclusivism and religiosity. Having in mind that particular socio-political and socio- cultural context of a contested space that has additionally been burdened by the recent economic crisis, this paper aims to analyse the potential of the Croatian youth for postmodern political activities and attitudes, as well as to detect the social characteristics of those young people that can be marked as bearers of an emancipative and postmodern orientation. The results communicate low youth postmodernist citizenship potential, which can be ascribed to insufficient political literacy of young people, as well as to a wider socio-cultural and educational context. This analysis uses data from two recent national surveys conducted in 2013 (N=2, 000) and 2015 (N=1, 146) on representative samples of youth in Croatia.
