Sažetak
This paper focuses on the oral history project in which Croatian female intellectuals and artists born approximately between 1920’s and 1930’s are being interviewed. The main goal of the interviews is to get a sense of their everyday life, especially on how they combined their personal life with intellectual or artistic endeavours in a society that traditionally assigned them domestic and nurturing roles. Did they feel different from other “normal” women around them because of their intellectual interest? How much was their personality and way of life shaped by themselves, and how much do they think they succumbed to societal expectations and pressures? The major argument is that the subjectivity of the interviews does not disqualify them as a valuable source for research into women’s history and the history of everyday life. Women’s experiences enrich “official” history and also offer younger women a way to search for new possibilities in their lives. The conclusion of the project has been offered by the respondents themselves. Almost all claimed that their life is uninteresting. They also mention flexibility as their main characteristic. The banality of women’s lives lies at the core of patriarchal society and may be the biggest problem for women, while adaptability could be the solution that they have come up with – since flexibility is not just being able to adjust, but also discovering new ways of being.
