Sažetak
The author considers the consequences of the possible integration of Central and Eastern European countries in the CAP (common agricultural policy) of the European Union and the potential economic impact on agriculture in these countries. The author concludes that the economic effects of a possible joining of Eastern countries to the European Union market would not be enormous for agriculture. Most exports from CEECs to the EU are already tariff free, but trade in agriculture has hardly been liberalized at all. Experience of CEECs countries has shown that after operation of Europe Agreement, imports from EU has increased more than reverse, mostly due to the transition problems. Analysis of agricultural trade flows of Croatian in the period 1990-94 shows that the EU exports towards Croatia increased and inverse EU imports from Croatia decreased. Therefore, the author believes that Croatian accession to the EU will not solve the structural adjustment problems. However, the responsibility for income support transferred from the EU to Member states involves the questions of the “renationalization” of the CAP.
