Sažetak
Besides numerous studies that mostly confirm the association between neuroticism and different subjective health outcomes, the literature does not reveal the examples of empirical testing of the Illness Behavior Model which postulates that there is a link between personality traits and subjective health outcomes, including physical symptoms. Therefore, the primary objective of this study is to test the Illness Behavior Model in childhood / adolescence, by examining primarily the delayed but also the immediate effects of Eysenck’s personality traits (neuroticism, extraversion, psychoticism) on physical symptoms (total number of experienced symptoms, frequency of experiencing physical symptoms and intensity of experienced symptoms). In addition, it examines whether personality affects physical symptoms directly, as a moderator of the relationship between mood and physical symptoms or the effects on mentioned subjective health outcomes are mediated by mood. The Illness Behavior Model has not been confirmed in the context of delayed relations while it has been partially confirmed in the context of immediate relations, as far as neuroticism and psychoticism are concerned, but not with regards to extraversion. Results suggest that the relationship between a certain personality trait and physical symptoms becomes more complex when viewed in the context of several personality traits and mood states simultaneously and when examined by more sophisticated statistical methods. Also, both delayed and immediate direct, mediating and moderating effects have been established of examined personality traits on the experience of physical symptoms which are, although higher than the recommended minimum effect size representing a practically significant effect for social science data (Ferguson, 2009), they are still weak and inconsistent over time and with different methods of assessment. Without additional empirical verification of obtained results, it would be very pretentious to make definitive conclusions about the nature of the relationship between certain personality traits and the experience of physical symptoms. Results are interpreted in the context of the initial theoretical concept, findings of available comparable research studies and methodological characteristics of the study.
