Sažetak
This paper deals with the cognitive approach to teaching the present perfect tense to Croatian EFL (English as a foreign language) pupils. It is based on an earlier study that compared the cognitive method of teaching present perfect to the traditional one. The present paper aims to provide some suggestions for using the cognitive teaching method for the primary school teachers who teach English in the 7th grades of elementary schools in Croatia (age 12-13). The purpose of this paper is to help Croatian (and possibly, some other Slavic speakers) understand and learn the English present perfect tense by supplying their teachers with an instruction method which differs from the traditional approach to teaching present perfect. The paper explains what cognitive grammar is, and how its findings can be implemented in the classroom. The four meanings of the present perfect are explained, and each meaning is supported by a schematic drawing. The author of this paper gives some suggestions on teaching the present perfect tense to primary school pupils, and mentions some activities that can be done in classroom.
