Sažetak
The most common environmental problem of our time is the presence of dangerous and toxic pollutants in aquatic systems [1]. Contamination of water by nitrogenous compounds (e.g. nitrate, nitrite, and ammonium) has become a global problem [2-3]. Elevated nitrate concentrations in drinking water can cause methemoglobinemia in infants, stomach cancer in adults, and eutrophication of aquatic environment [4]. There are many different processes and methods for water treatment, but one of the commonly used is ion exchange resins. Some studies showed that it is possible to prepare anion exchange resins using agricultural sources and by-products, i.e. low-cost waste materials [5]. In this study, chemically modified hazelnut shell anion exchange resin was used in sorption studies. The resin was synthesized by reacting N, N-dimethylformamide, epichlorohydrin, ethylenediamine and triethylamine. Nitrate was successfully removed at 25, 35 and 45 °C. Maximum sorption capacities were in range of 26.7 – 32.05 mg/g. The obtained adsorption data was analyzed using the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models showing that nitrate adsorption on modified hazelnut shell resin fitted in the Freundlich model well.
