Sažetak
In spite of the proclaimed neutrality, and nominal support of its mighty protectors, in order to ensure its survival and escape the fate of many other city-states that were annexed by its more powerful neighbors, Republic of Dubrovnik was forced to maintain its own defenses. Its defensive system was made of (1) armed forces, consisting of a company of trained artillery specialists (organized around Scoula di Santa Barbara) and a small core of mercenary troops, which in case of need was expended by mobilization of territorial militia, (2) system of extensive fortifications that covered all the key points of the Republic and (3) its own small armaments industry and a set of well supplied magazines and storages of war materials. Armed forces of the Republic of Dubrovnik were intended to serve two main functions. In the first place, they functioned as a mean of deterrence. The system of well maintained and supplied fortifications was intended to discourage and beet off any surprise attack, and in case of a more formal attack, its forces were expected to hold off the attack and buy time, until diplomatic network of the Republic managed to activate some of its protectors. Secondly, it was to provide the Republic with capabilities to conduct its own small scale police force operations, such as maintaining law and order in cases of civil unrest, fighting off small raids of pirates and corsairs or pacification of rebellious parts of the Republic.
