Sažetak
Generally speaking, there is a certain confusion when it comes to the very scope of vulnerability. Philosophical literature defines vulnerability as an inherent characteristic of human embodiment: everyone is vulnerable by virtue of being human. On the other side, political approach focuses on a web of interpersonal relations and specific context- dependent variables that cause certain individuals or groups to be vulnerable: only some, the “others”, are vulnerable and need special protection. These two approaches do not communicate easily. However, they seem to share the basic conviction that vulnerability is characterized by certain “negativity” (Henk ten Have, 2015). This "negativity" denotes the condition of being exposed to the other, as injurable and dependable creature. Political and philosophical approaches provide very different answers to such negativity of vulnerability, especially concerning the role of human agency. This paper will thus explore connections between vulnerability and autonomy in both approaches and point out to their surprising lack of interest in concepts of exploitation and human flourishing.
