Sažetak
Over the recent years, zebrafish Danio rerio became increasingly used model organism in almost all scientific research fields. Because of the fact that physiological and molecular function at the cell and organ level are highly comparable between the zebrafish and mammals, including humans, zebrafish attracted the attention of many scientists. The zebrafish has several experimental advantages such as small size, high fecundity, short life cycle, rapid ex utero development, transparent embryos. Increasing research on zebrafish resulted in detailed knowledge about zebrafish embryogenesis, fully sequenced genome, genetically modified specimens. Zebrafish embryos are not protected life stages (similar to in vitro assays), which makes them an ideal alternative for in vivo testing in rodents. The zebrafish embryo test (ZFET), as a substitute for acute toxicity with adult zebrafish, is a reliable tool for determing the toxic potential of tested compound/sample. Transparency of the embryo allows us to record lethal endpoints and malformations in the first few days after fertilization, including coagulation of the embryo, lack of somite formation, non-detachment of the tail, lack of heart beat, formation of oedema, developmental retardation, etc. According to current studies and 3R principles, zebrafish is an ideal model in many fields of scientific research and should be considered as an alternative model to mammals.
