Sažetak
The private health care sector in Croatia accounts for less than 10% of the total income of the health care system, while private consumption has a relatively small proportion of 15% of the total health care consumption. However, in an environment highly dominated by the public health care system, private health care institutions in the past two decades have increased both in number and in financial results. Therefore, in order to grasp the traits of creating and sustaining competitive advantage in the private health care sector, one must undertake a twofold process – one that will include both diagnostic and prognostic models and methods of strategic analysis. The purpose of this paper is to give an introduction into the strategic analysis of the private health care sector in Croatia by discussing most important historical and legal issues and provisions of health care, as well as specificities of demand for health care services. This will be expanded by an overview of private health care sector in Croatia based on the analysis of financial statements of 974 privately owned health institutions in the period 2007-2009. The paper will conclude by laying out a course for further research.
