Sažetak
Selenium (Se) supplementation has been shown to change the distribution and excretion of mercury (Hg) in suckling rats exposed to inorganic Hg. The effect of exogenous Se on the level and role of Hg-induced metallothionein (MT) expression in young animals has not yet been studied. Seven- day-old Wistar pups were orally pre-treated with Se (6 μmol Na2SeO3/kg b.w.) for 3 days, and then co-treated with Hg (6 μmol HgCl2/kg b.w.) for the following 4 days. This group (Se+Hg) was compared to groups treated with Hg or Se alone, or with a vehicle (Control). Immunoblotting analyses revealed strong MT expression in the kidney (P<0.001), but not in the liver of Hg-exposed rats. Hepatic MT was stimulated by Se treatment in Se and Se+Hg groups. Renal MT expression was lower in Se- supplemented rats exposed to Hg compared to the Hg-only group. Our study in suckling rats confirmed earlier results for adult animals, and indicated that the binding of Hg to selenoproteins may form an inert complex that cannot induce MT.
