Sažetak
European Federation for Pharmaceutical Sciences (EUFEPS) exists to help to meet the challenges and seize the opportunities created by the consolidations occurring both within Europe and globally, driven on by a combination of rapid advances in science and technology, economic pressures, and by political will. Within this frame, EUFEPS’s role and contributions are amply expressed in its mission statement “EUFEPS serves and advances excellence in the pharmaceutical sciences and innovative drug research in Europe”. This mission also includes a scientific training and education, and it serves to represent and foster the interests of scientists engaged in medicines research and development, medicines regulation, medicines utilisation, and medicines policy making. It is specifically focussing efforts on the generation of a new cadre of scientists to ensure commitment to excellence in scientific endeavour across Europe and beyond. EUFEPS has been developing a capability and looks now at strengthening that approach with a number of complementary initiatives in order to bring together a wider platform of research-based organizations, capable of supporting all European Union initiatives that will be devoted to strengthen medicines research and a stronger research-based pharmaceutical sector in Europe. With this, EUFEPS aims at supporting European institutions in order to contribute to a wider specialised employment policy and sectorial industrial policy together with strengthening Europe competitively, as well as serving healthcare, looking at unmet medical needs. Within the development of an agenda for medicines research within Horizon 2020, EUFEPS assumes a number of general principles: • academia has to contribute actively on creating novel concepts and EUFEPS proposes a specific fund to support such research for medicines with a similar concept as the European Research Council, • need to optimise the role of University for Research & Development, training of scientists and bridging with business areas/companies/industry, • Public-Private Partnerships are here to stay and have demonstrated that they facilitate , and speed up, the application of innovations coming from academia, • European research programmes should cover integral research costs for Universities, • advanced training and Continuous Professional Development (CPD) in pharmaceutical sciences are key priorities.
