Sažetak
Head deformities in cultured fifi sh reduce their growth rate and survival, as well as degrading their external morphology, all of which can lead to considerable economic losses. While spinal deformities in cultured common carp have been analyzed in detail, relatively little is known about the prevalence, types or causes of head deformities. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of head bone deformities in 52 common carp, aged 2 years old, with spinal disorders from a farm in Croatia. Deformities were detected by clinical analysis, followed by detailed bone analysis, using X-rays and stereomicroscopy. Of the 52 fifi sh, 8 (15.4 %) were found to have head deformities. Most deformities were bilateral and primarily affected the jaw arch and opercular string bone. Genetics and mechanical stress are proposed as possible causes of these deformities.
