Sažetak
Lameness in bovine health management constitutes an important economic and welfare problem. The standard for bovine claw health improvement and lameness prevention is routine functional trimming. Early studies of the bovine foot used systemic measurements to investigate the aetiology of claw diseases and to establish principles for optimal foot care. Most texts on practical aspects of functional foot trimming in cattle have focussed on the hind claws. A possible reason for this is that only few percents of all claw diseases have been attributed to the forelimbs. In 30 adult Simmental stud bulls (5, 73 years old in average) that showed no clinical signs of lameness, after the functional correction, the forelimb claw measurements were performed. For each medial and lateral claw the claw lenght, claw height, heel height, claw diagonal and claw width were measured. Vernier caliper with 1 millimetre precision was used. The aim of this study was to compare the described claw dimensions of medial and lateral forelimb claw. Claw lenght of medial claw was 8, 65 ± 0, 85 cm, lateral 8, 69 ± 0, 91cm. Claw height was 7, 78 ± 0, 81 cm on medial and 7, 72 ± 0, 69 cm on lateral claw. Heel height of medial claw was 5, 49 ± 0, 56 cm and lateral 5, 71 ± 0, 73 cm. Claw width was 7, 05 ± 0, 77 cm on medial and 7, 42 ± 0, 72 cm on lateral claw. Claw diagonal of medial claw was 15, 48 ± 1, 00 cm and lateral 15, 51 ± 1, 06 cm. The measure with generally high standard variation in group of stud bulls is claw diagonal (15, 50 ± 1, 03 cm). Although the medial claw is slightly smaller then the lateral, there is no significant difference of included claw dimensions of lateral and medial forelimb claw in stud bulls. The results show that dimensions of healty forelimb claws of Simmental breed stud bulls differentiate from the dimensions described for dairy cows. It is evident that the differences between paired claws in the forelimb were not as pronounced as in the hind limb.
