Sažetak
Primary criteria in studying archaeological pottery is focused on funcional aspects of vessels, with an addition of mineralogical and petrographic analyses. Ceramic petrography is one of the indispensible analytical techniques for modern pottery studies. It characterizes the fabric of clay materials through its microscopic examination in thin-section. Petrography provides information on the character of a ceramic fabric and materials used to create it as well as on the choices that potter made during the process of refining the clay, forming the vessel and firing it. By establishing similarities and differences between fabrics, we can determine relationships between different types of wares, identify characteristics that indicate provenance, and reconstuct technological processes involved in manufacturing (selection and treatment of raw materials, forming techniques, decorative techniques and firing characteristics). The aim of the study is to prove a continuity of pottery production at Late Roman town of Cibalae, to examine the development of various types and shapes of vessels, and to indicate changes observed in technology and typology of vessels dated to the end of the 4th century. A special emphasis is put on those vessels which have not been studied so far, nor typologically determined. They display new ethnic elements dated towards the end of that period and connected to migrations of German tribes. The petrographic analysis included an integrated approach, macroscopic and microscopic examinations. There have been 5 resprentative samples from 4 different archaeological sites within area of Vinkovci. After a broud classification of fabric, a specific selection of materials from each group was chosen for thin-section analysis. The groups were classified by paste color, firing environment, neoformations, void shapes, temper and provinance of temper, sorting and roundness. The analysis are done on both coarse and fine ware, which are believed to be products of a local manufacture. The XRF analysis confirmed uniform material for the pottery body, without significant influence of the temper, with exception for the carbonate rich temper. Mineralogical phases were confirmed by XRD, EDXRF and Micro Raman spectroscopy.
