Sažetak
Many metal oxides and mixed metal oxides have found application as pigments in different technologies. The white TiO2 powder can be considered as one of the most important inorganic pigments. Ilmenite and Ti slag are predominantly used as feedstock in the manufacture of TiO2 pigment by sulphate process. In this technology Fe^(3+) ions are reduced to Fe^(2+) by adding scrap iron. Also, a significant amounts of copperas (hydrated ferrous sulphate) as a waste product is produced by the process. In the present work Mössbauer spectroscopy, XRD and FE SEM/EDS were applied in the analysis of Fe-bearing phases that appear in the manufacture of white TiO2 pigment. The samples were obtained from manufacturer of white TiO2 pigment „Cinkarna“, Celje, Slovenia. Mössbauer spectrum of ilmenite ore from Australia used as feedstock in the process of TiO2 production was recorded to determine Fe2+/Fe3+ composition. Copperas is utilized in the production of H2SO4. Solid residue obtained upon the calcination of copperas showed one sextet, assigned to hematite (α-Fe2O3), and central quadrupole doublet of small intensity. When magnetic phase was separated the presence of substoichiometric magnetite (Fe3-xO4) was also noticed in the corresponding Mössbauer spectrum. Copperas is sensitive to mode of its storing. A different hydrated ferrous sulphates were found in dependence on the mode of FeSO4∙7H2O storage. Mössbauer spectroscopy was also applied in the characterization of yellow pigment (α-FeOOH) produced from copperas.
