Sažetak
Protected areas are due to their uniqueness the fundamental values of any state, which cannot be reproduced or transferred to some other surroundings. Therefore, their protection it is extremely important in order to reduce degradation, but also to preserve their vitality. Also, specific landscape and biodiversity of protected areas, along with traditional socio-cultural characteristics of the region, make them very important development potential in various segments. Therefore, the protected areas are priorities in the development guidelines of rural regions. Tourism as a tool for sustainable development is one of the development priorities, but it can have the real effectiveness only trough synergetic development of protected areas and the rural environment, as well as all their components. This paper analyses the possibilities of application of sustainable development within different geographical areas and areas with different levels of protection, trough case studies of National Park Sutjeska and Nature park Hutovo Blato. By carefully conceived conduct of economic policy within the protected areas, it is possible to preserve and revitalize natural environment and socio cultural landscape. Considering the fact that the revitalization of rural areas does not mean restoring the rural areas to the original way of life, but new start, in accordance with modern needs on the basis of tradition of community and space, the aim of this paper is to analyse the importance of synergy and linkage of protected areas and the surrounding rural area.
