Sažetak
This paper focuses on (post)memory of the socialist era, primarily related to the ex-Yugoslav president Josip Broz Tito, and its ambivalent status in Croatia today. The authors analyse how materializations and evocations of Tito have been treated in public space since the 1990s. They view memory shift that occurred at that time as both an element and a symptom of the nation-building process. By pointing to coexistence of two different regimes of memory as well as scrutinizing discourses that are raised around the public display of Tito’s name this paper will explore pro-memorial and anti-memorial practices that occurred at various memorial occasions. First and foremost it will try to historicize and contextualise numerous anti-memorial public displays of the initiative called Krug za trg that persist in challenging town policy makers to rename the Marshal Tito Square. Secondly it will try to detect groups that advocate continuity of memorialization and explore the narratives in support of Tito. By so doing, we wish to analyse the discursive formations that are showing the workings of the history-from-below. In other words we search for everyday (post)memorial practices that are unleashed by ambiguous politics of memorialisation and uncertainty in general political dealings with socialist past.
