Sažetak
EFL lexicography started to develop, as an individual genre, in the beginning of the 20th century. Since then dictionary compilers have been working hard in order to create dictionaries which would adequately meet the needs of the EFL learners. Throughout the decades dictionaries have been improving, according to the increasing learners’ needs, by incorporating various innovations regarding their macro- and micro- structure. Among the numerous EFL dictionaries, which have been launched on the EFL market ever since, Oxford Advanced Learners’ Dictionary (OALD) stood out as the only EFL dictionary which has been continuously republished for over 60 years. With each new edition upgraded, OALD conforms to the contemporary language teaching and learning processes worldwide. The aims of the thesis are to define and explain the main characteristics of the EFL dictionaries, present their historical development, as well as point out EFL users’ lexicographically relevant needs, with special focus on chronological structural development of OALD, the first serious contributor of the genre which is still the most widely used EFL dictionary.
