Sažetak
The Roma during World War I were an integral part of Croatian society as a completely marginal socio-economic group. The First World War was certainly reflected on the life of Roma in Croatian area. One part of the Roma was mobilized and participated in the Austro-Hungarian military units, or as labor units behind the front lines. However, the Croatian authorities negatively perceived nomadic Roma as a major social problem and, probably influenced by the similar provisions of the Hungarian authorities and the frequent complaints about their criminal activities, issued special provisions. The intention of the Croatian authorities was to regulate the position of nomadic Roma and incorporate them into the State’s economic system. The result of those provisions was that a part of the Roma was sedenterized, while other Roma still led a nomadic way of life.
