Sažetak
Twenty years after its initial meteoric rise, social capital remains one of the most highly visible social science concepts, not only in academia, but also in policy and even public discourse. This lecture will give a brief overview of the major developments in social capital theory and research, and trace the expansion of the concept over disciplinary and thematic borders, as well as its adoption by powerful institutional actors (i.e., the World Bank). In the diversity of existing approaches, we shall identify two main strands of the theory, one stemming from the early contributions of Pierre Bourdieu, and the other from the works of Robert Putnam, and examine their crucial differences and possibilities for their integration. Finally, taking into account the most salient critiques of the concept, we shall examine some of the effects and implications these various forms and uses of social capital have in relation to issues of social and economic development, equality and justice.
