Sažetak
A study performed in 1972 in a sample of the population from the Socialist Republic of Croatia which comprised 1552 men and 1667 women aged 38—57 has shown that in 42.5 per cent of men and in 32.1 per of women the relative body weight was within the »desirable« weight limits of 96—110 per cent in respect to height. The tables of the New York Life Insurance Company were used as weight standards. The percentage of obese persons whose relative body weight was be- yond 120 per cent of the desirable weight was 37.6 for women and 22.5 for men. The percentage of thin persons whose relative body weight was below 90 per cent of the desirable one was 5.2 for men and 2.3 for women. The relationship between the relative body weight and the prevalen- ce of frequent chronic diseases grouped in 75 categories was also studied. It has been shown that arterial hypertension follows a rise in the relative body weight. Abnormal ECG findings did not significantly differ among the weight groups. An association was established between obesity on the one hand and diabetes and chronic diseases of the gall bladder on the other. However, chronic bronchitis, a past history of lung tuberculosis, and anemia were more frequent among the lean than among the obese. The feeling of good health did not essentially differ from one group to another in respect to the relative body weight, but it tended to be more frequent in persons with a higher degree of obesity. On an average the number of diagnoses was the lowest in persons with a desirable body weight and in slightly obese ones. It is pointed out that more people should try to maintain their rela¬tive body weights between 91 and 120 per cent of the desirable weight.
