Sažetak
This chapter focuses on the transition to parenthood as a developmental phase in the life of an adult with special emphasis on the subjective well-being of partners who have become parents for the first time. The overall objective of this chapter is to provide a systematic review of research on subjective well-being during the transition to parenthood. To achieve this goal, the chapter is divided into several sections, covering various aspects of new parents’ well-being and factors affecting it. First, the chapter opens with a brief overview of common theoretical approaches used in research on the transition to parenthood, followed by the section that summarizes changes in the subjective well-being of new parents, specifically changes in life satisfaction, marital satisfaction, stress, depression and anxiety level. The next two sections point out the role of individual and societal factors which are proved to contribute to parental well-being during this important life transition. Furthermore, the part related to societal factors which influence subjective well-being during the transition to parenthood addresses legislation and demographic trends in Croatia since they create social climate in which the transition into parenthood occurs. Finally, attention will be given to practical implications for primary prevention and educational programmes for future parents.
