A sample of 2414 subjects of both sexes was examined, aged 35-54 years at the time of the first examination. Subjects came from three urban and three rural Croatian regions, three in the interior and three in coastal regions. In all subjects an electrocardiogram was analysed according to the Minnesota code. The examination was repeated after three years and again after 13 years. The prevalence of myocardial infraction increased 4-fold as the cohort aged 13 years. ST-segment depression of 0.5 mm or deeper increased 3.5-fold, and T-wave inversion of 1 mm or deeper increased 2.0-fold after the 13-year period compared with the beginning of the study. Left bundle branch block and right bundle branch block increased 8-fold, and ventricular premature beats increased 6-fold as the cohort aged 13 years. Atrial fibrillation, which was not recorded in the first and second examinations, reached 1.15% in the third examination. Neither sinus tachycardia nor prolonged P-Q interval showed essential changes in frequency during the 13-year period of the study. The findings are discussed including the differences in the findings between the sexes.
