Sažetak
Deriving reproducible supramolecular assembly strategies is an essential challenge in tailoring new solids. Recently, the halogen bond (XB) has also found its place among the other well established structure-directing interactions in the crystal engineering arena. In fact, in many organic materials (including a large range of pharmaceutically relevant compounds) the halogen bond frequently acts as a main driving force in assembling organic solids, even in competition with more commonly appreciated interactions such as HB or pi-pi stacking. On the other hand, metal-organic systems that rely on XBs have been much less investigated which is surprising since a large number of well-known ligands that are extensively used in coordination chemistry are decorated with one or more halogen atoms capable of acting as halogen-bond donors. In this contribution, we present a series of halide complexes of copper(II) with pyrazine derivatives that have been synthesized and characterized to explore the structural landscape of halogen bonded copper(II) assemblies. The potential impact of different halogen bond donating and accepting capacity of a series of halogen and halide atoms on the structural outcome was also examined. Structural, thermal and spectroscopic data complemented by CSD data mining and extensive computational studies have been used for the interpretation of experimental efforts.
