Sažetak
This research presents the monitoring study of reproductive traits in Charolais breed bulls kept in the basic genetic nucleus herd for production of bulls and heifers of this breed in Croatia. Data referring to the main herd breeding Charolais cattle were used from the Center for grassland, Agronomy Faculty University of Zagreb, Croatia. In the period from 1993 to 2011, 266 male and 234 female calves were born. Average birth weight was 45.13 kg for male and 42.97 kg for female calves. The data related to the gender, birth weight, calving season on which weight to weaning depends (210th day), weight 365th day, growth to weaning, life weight gain, growth in the test, muscular development, skeleton development and functional properties were monitored. Regarding to the muscular development, skeleton development and functional properties, the bulls that were calved in the autumn had higher values (70%, 73% or 73%, respectively) for these characteristics than the bulls calved in the spring (56%, 67% or 67%, respectively) and winter (63%, 68% or 68%, respectively). Regarding muscular development, skeleton development and functional properties, the bulls calved in the autumn had higher values for these traits than the bulls calved in the spring and winter seasons. Although losses of calves of Charolais breed were not significant, they may cause economic losses to the beef breed farmers.
