Sažetak
The impact of social change on the development of education is important, therefore it is also important for the development of music teaching in elementary school. Through the 20th century two neighboring countries, Croatia and Slovenia, are mostly experiencing the same socio - political change, but it is possible to observe many differences in the development of school system as well as in the development of the teaching music. This paper analyzes the socio - political influences on the development of music education in Croatia and Slovenia in several key periods: the early 20th century until the First World War, between the two world wars, after the Second World War until the independence and from the nineties to today's reality, effects of the Bologna process and EU membership. With the efforts of important musical pedagogues through the the mentioned period and under the influence of European music (pedagogical directions), music teaching in both of these two countries is developing mostly in the same direction. However, we will point out the significant differences that we notice from the 80s of the 20th century, especially after independence until today. European reality offers new opportunities but also poses new challenges that will affect the future development of music teaching.
