Sažetak
Design of new materials with desired physical properties is still a highly challenging task as it relies on a very delicate balance of a range of non-covalent interactions. Therefore, to be in a position to tailor a specific/desired property necessitates a much improved understanding of the competition and balance between various non- covalent interactions. In this study we have examined systems equipped with several supramolecular functionalities with intention to firstly map out their structural landscape and report on the hierarchy of supramolecular interactions. We opted for the amide moieties, inorganic halides/pseudohalies and aromatic systems, as all the selected functionalities have their supramolecular behavior already well documented. However, the literature data on their supramolecular behavior in multi- component systems are scarce. Therefore, we report on a series of halide/pseudohalide complexes of cadmium(II) with secondary amides, their synthesis, crystallization techniques employed, spectral characterization, electronic and thermal properties. Although the single crystal X-ray structure analysis revealed supramolecular building blocks of various dimensionalities (from monomeric, trimeric and tetrameric units to polymeric chains), the dimeric supramolecular motif designed by a R22(8) graph- set descriptor appeared to be the synthon of choice in majority of systems under study.
