Sažetak
Aim: Oral Impacts on Daily Performance (OIDP) is one of the most widely used socio-dental indicators, developed to measure oral impacts that seriously affect individuals’ daily activities. This study aimed to translate it and to explore its psychometric properties in Croatian cultural context with special emphasis for orthodontic use. Materials and Methods: The OIDP instrument was translated from English to Croatian in a forward-backward method and tested on a sample of 702 participants (64% females) aged 18-86 years for its reliability and validity. Sample for discriminant ability for orthodontic use included 175 subjects (68% females) aged 18-41 assessed by Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need Dental Health Component (IOTN DHC). Results: Internal consistency of Croatian version of OIDP was acceptable (alpha=0.80) and 69.4% of the people had oral impacts relating to one or more performances, with eating being the most frequently affected performance (53.7%). Sensitive teeth were the most frequently reported oral problem (61.5% ; impact 1.0±1.0) followed by tooth position (54.6% ; impact 1.1±1.2). In construct validity testing there was statistically significant correlation between OIDP and self-assessed oral health, dental treatment need, somatisation, depression and Oral Health Impact Profile (ranging from r=0.273-0.516 in general population. The test-retest reliability (N=41) was high (r=0.99 ; 95% CI: 0.97-0.99), the mean difference between the OIDP summary scores in two-week interval was not statistically significant. In discriminant validity testing OIDP was able to distinguish subjects with orthodontic treatment need (IOTN DHC≥3) from those with no or borderline need (4.8±7.6 vs. 2.4±4.3 ; p=0.016). Eating and smiling were the performances mostly affected by malocclusion (p<0.05). In orthodontic group OIDP strongly correlated with self-perceived malocclusion, satisfaction with teeth appearance and orthodontic treatment need (r=0.608-0.750). Conclusion: The Croatian OIDP instrument showed good psychometric properties confirming its appropriateness for use among Croatian general population, as well as in orthodontics.
