Sažetak
Abstract: The essentiality of iron together with its potential toxicity suggests that abnormalities of cellular iron metabolism in any of its different steps may affect both the survival and the proliferative activity of the cells. One of the dangers of iron is its ability to favour neoplastic cell growth. Iron can be carcinogenic in several ways. First, iron participates in Fenton reaction, which results in free radicals formation. Secon, iron excess can bolster the growth of neoplastic cells by suppressing cell immunity. Third, iron has been identified as one of the critical nutrients for unrestricted tumour cell multipšlication. Serum ferritin appears to be considered as a useful marker of some oncological diseases activity.
