Sažetak
The recent proposal of hypersexual disorder proposal (Kafka, 2010) and rising public concerns over “addictive” sexual behaviors and their consequences point to the importance of studying possible etiological mechanisms, including high sexual desire. As the concept of problematic hypersexuality (PH) has been criticized as empirically indistinguishable from high sexual desire (HSD), the aim of this study was to investigate whether PH and HSD are distinct constructs. An online survey about Internet pornography use, carried out in 2014 among 4, 597 Croatian participants (Mage=31.1, SD=9.67 ; 56.5% women). Membership in the PH group (n=93) was determined using the Hypersexual Disorder Screening Inventory (Parsons et al., 2013) and Hypersexual Behavior Consequences Scale (Reid, Garos, & Fong, 2012). Highest values on two indicators of sexual desire/interest defined membership in the HSD group (n=115). Only a negligible overlap between the PH and HSD groups was observed (n=7 ; 3.4%). The PH and HSD groups differed on five indicators: relationship status, sexual orientation, consequences of substance abuse, sexual boredom, and negative attitudes toward pornography. When compared to the rest of the sample, the PH group significantly differed from other participants on twice as many indicators than the HSD group. Male gender, negative moral self-evaluation, and attitudes toward pornography distinguished both groups from the rest of the sample—with the PH group reporting more negative and the HSD group more positive attitudes toward pornography than other participants. Not surprisingly, the PH group reported significantly more negative and the HSD group more positive feelings accompanying pornography use than the rest of the sample. The PH, but not HD, group was characterized by higher odds of being single and non-heterosexual, as well as of reporting adverse consequences of substance abuse, higher sexual boredom, lower happiness and life satisfaction, and higher depression scores than other participants. While the proportion of participants who reported TSO≥7 was significantly larger in the HSD (66.0%) than PH group (46.2%), no significant between- group difference in the proportion of participants who self-identified as sex addicts was observed. According to this study results, HSD does not seem to be an underlying mechanism of PH. Problematic hypersexuality and high sexual desire appear as distinct constructs, partially differentiated by attitudes about pornography, shame, and self-stigmatization. More data is needed to explore possible culture-specific character of the reported findings.
