Sažetak
During April and especially beginning of May 2014 extremely extensive rain affected Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Result was extreme arise of water levels of rivers which create Sava’s basin. In higher positions rivers made torrent, leaving behind devastated area, but all water collected in Sava River created enormous lake. Along Sava River in Croatian side dike was built to protect populated areas. All inundation areas along Sava create extremely large breeding site for floodwater mosquitoes. But on May 17th dike was broken in lower Posavina in two places and water flooded five villages. Except of material damage after several days mosquitoes start to fly. Croatian Ministry of health have organized crisis Unit which organized recovery. Department of Biology University of Osijek conducted mosquito monitoring. First field work was done on May 27th, when mosquitoes were in 4th larval stage. It was impossible to organize larval control, so enormous number of adult mosquitoes appeared in the area. CDC traps with dry ice as bait were used to monitor adult mosquitoes. In total 208 sampling was done in 46 sites in all Posavina region. In some sites sampling was done only two times, but in Vukovar-srijem county sampling was done in 12 sites all season. All together 346.286 specimens was sampled and 17 species were determined. The most numerous species were Aedes vexans (48, 03% ; 166.312 specimens), Ochleratus sticticus (40, 64% ; 140.728 specimens) and Culex pipiens (10, 62% ; 36.788 specimens) which make up 99, 29% of mosquito fauna. The biggest catch of 23.196 mosquito specimens was made in Spačva forest on June 21st, 2014 for 12 hours. In first month after flood, the number of mosquitoes per trap ranged from 1.000 to 6.000 in endangered villages. Mosquito control which was based in adulticiding was not successful. In second part of season we monitored Cx. pipiens populations in flooded area of Vukovar-srijem county to prevent possible WNV infections. Share of Cx. pipiens mosquitoes ranged from 4-85%, but no viral DNA was found in analysed mosquitoes.
