Sažetak
Panelists will present the results of their preceding research and first dilemmas with which they are facing in the frame of their research project »Mediatization of public lihe: contradictions in the sphere of politics and everyday life. Mediatization is a process in which mass media (as media institutions or technologies) is gaining influence over other social institutions or spheres and everyday life. The main theme of the panel talk will be about problems of understanding the relation between politics and media as is implicitly put forward in the concept of mediatization: from implicit understanding of politicians' roles as »victims« of media through technodeterminism to exaggerated simplification and decontextualization of the way the media operate. Panelists will reflect the political consequences of politics vs. Media relations in modern postdemocracies with emphasis on dealing with attempts do depoliticize political communities and the role of ICT within building new political subjectivities. The talk will be about visual culture of mediatized politics using the case of social media twitter and the narational strategy of personalization that is being used by political agents within their visual communication. Discussion will cross the classical Weberian concept of power which is hardly applicable to social media because we are facing more refined technologically and ideologically enframed forms of power behind companies like Google, Facebook or Twitter. Last but not least, the panelists will deal with reports on reasons behind the financial and political crisis by Slovenian mainstream media and their adoptation of neoliberal discourse forged by political and economic powers, focusing on journalistic reports on events instead of problems, simplified oppositions and naturalization of power relations.
