Sažetak
With respect to energy production, most islands depend mainly on the importation of fossil fuels, while others rely on weak electricity grid connection to the mainland. On the other hand, islands in general present a considerable potential in renewable energies. Islands that have energy sources such as hydro or geothermal energy, can easily integrate them into the power system, but those with mainly intermittent renewable energy sources (wind, solar) have to tackle the need of energy storage. Here, advanced energy planning must be used and different intermittent and constant resources to satisfy the demand for energy, taking into account security of supply and necessary supply storage. This paper intends to demonstrate the urging necessity of having energy storage systems in small islands. The need to storage intermittent energy is an important issue in the island of Porto Santo. It was build an energy storage system with a 13 kW PEM electrolyser, a 55m3 storage vessel and two fuel cells of 5 kW each to store, in hydrogen form, part the electricity produced by the 1.1 MW windmill park. The main objective of this system is to produce hydrogen from electricity that otherwise would be wasted, and to use this hydrogen to produce again electricity during peak time.
