Sažetak
In Croatian fisheries, very important and the most numerous fish species are small pelagic fish such as sardine, anchovy, mackerel, chub mackerel and sprat. Those species, especially sardine and anchovy, coming mostly from pure seine catches, present more than 80% of total fish catches in Croatia. Sardine, as well as mackerels is mostly used in fish processing industry - anchovy are commonly salted or marinated. Round sardinella, species which is not autochthonous in the Adriatic Sea is recently becoming more common. This species is used mostly as food for tunas in cages, and rarely in the fish processing industry. Fisheries products are exported from Croatia to various countries worldwide. Changes in the distribution and abundance of small pelagic fish have been recorded in the Adriatic Sea as well as in the other seas. Since small pelagic fish constitutes the base of food chain in marine environment, its population size fluctuations may have influence on other fish and edible resources of marine communities. Furthermore, consequences are not only seen directly in marine ecosystems, but also in the state economy. According to the recent scientific data of the Adriatic Sea fish species, current state of fisheries management for some pelagic species, especially for anchovy, needs to be improved. One of the fisheries development objectives of the new Croatian National Plan Strategy is maintaining the sustainable and stable small pelagic species fishery, especially of anchovy and sardine. An approach, in which the small pelagic fisheries management would be based on all species in pelagic ecosystem, is recommended due to their mutual competitiveness, considering food and space, role in the food chain and common changes in their distribution and abundance.
