Sažetak
The article discusses iconographic aspects of the monumental silver casket of St Simeon the Prophet which was commissioned in 1377 by Queen Elizabeth, the wife of King Louis I the Great of Hungary (1342-1382). The iconography of the casket was divided in two parts: one can be linked to the female patron and the other to the translation of St Simeon’s relics. Through a specific set of scenes concerning this translation, the creators of the iconographic programme emphasized that they were the real owners of the saint’s body and by doing this assert themselves and their town. The author of this paper argues that the patrons responsible for such an iconographic programme were local noblemen. The visual interpretation of the translation of the saint’s body depicted on the casket relies greatly on the scenes from the cycle of the translation of the body of St Mark from the façade of St Mark’s basilica at Venice.
