Sažetak
This chapter deals with revivalist articulations of traditional music in Croatia during the Homeland War (1991–1995) and its aftermath. In addition to looking at official public revivalist production, the chapter focuses on revivalist articulations at the grassroots level, investigating them as a tool used by common people to cope with war’s unsafeness and destruction. Attention is paid to how traditional music has been allied with different ideological agendas and significances related to nationalism, patriotism, home and safety, coping and reconstruction, local identity and history, and shifting regional and ethnic portrayals. The chapter also addresses how traditional music has been performed through different presentational styles: “authentic” folklore, “stylized” folklore, and traditional-pop fusions. The presented ethnographic material further reveals how reinterpretations of folk music, both by musicians and scholars, have been laden with war-induced baggage. The chapter concludes by putting forth the notion of traditional Croatian music as being a continuity of articulations instead of revivalist disjunctures.
