Sažetak
The adsorption of surface-active compounds contained in laundry detergents and fabric softeners is determined by the property of the interface between the aqueous bath solution and the textile fabric. Being a solid-liquid interfacial phenomenon, adsorption may thus be monitored by the zeta potential. For macroscopic solids such as textile fabrics, the zeta potential is calculated from the measurement of the streaming potential. The complexity of textile fibers and fabrics does not match the boundary conditions of the simplified model of the electrochemical double layer that describes the charge distribution and the origin of the zeta potential at the solid-liquid interface. We thus use the raw data of streaming potential for the characterization of the surface charge of fabrics and its changes upon detergent and softener adsorption. We report the rate of adsorption and the order of kinetics of a cationic softener on cotton/modacrylic knitted fabrics by monitoring the change of the streaming potential. The adsorption is determined by the different affinities of the major compound of the softener, a surfactant derived from a fatty acid with a quaternary ammonium group, with both the hydrophilic cotton and the hydrophobic modacrylic yarn of the blended fabrics.
