Sažetak
The main role of immune system is recognition and protection against elements that are foreign to the body and then attacking and destroying them. Many external and internal factors may change the immune functions: age, chronically ill or exhausted people, a previous illness, as well as an intense physical activity. Regulatory T cells (Tregs) play a crucial role in peripheral T-cell tolerance. NKT cells represent a type of T cells that share the common features of natural killer cells (NK) and conventional T cells. NKT cells are involved in the regulation of innate immune responses, tumor rejection, posttransplantation immunotherapy and immunological control of autoimmune disease. Tregs seem to have active suppression mode and may induce peripheral tolerance. Tolerance is a mechanism that may prevent or suppress potentially injurious immune responses. Aim of this study was to investigate the percentage of Tregs and NKT cells by flow cytometry in professional athletes, as well as the percentage of perforin positive cells in lymphocyte subpopulations in peripheral blood during a routine examination of professional athletes. The percentage of certain lymphocyte subpopulations were compared with the control value of voluntary blood donors, as well as with “recreational” or noncompetitive athletes. Our data showed the increased percentage of Tregs, NKT cells and double positive (perforin +NK +cells) in professional athletes. Tracking changes in the percentage of T regulatory cells may contribute to better understanding the interaxtions of hormonal and immunological network during physical activity.
