Sažetak
The aim of this study is evaluation of cardiac characteristics in athletes. We have examinated 37 athletes – rowers (36 male, 1 female), including the Olympic bronze medal rowing eight, age 17.2 ± 2.9 years (range 13-28), height 183.6 ± 7.1 cm (170-200), weight 77.6 ± 10.6 kg (58-94). We have measured blood presure (BP), pulse rate (PR) and ECG according to NHBPEP WGHC in Children and Adolescens, Pediatrics 1996 ; 98: 649-58. Some of them had positive familial history: diabetes mellitus in 8 cases (22%), allergy in 6 (16%) and cardiovascular disease in 1 case (3%). Results: Blood pressure: systolic 117 ± 10 (90 - 140) mmHg, diastolic 80 ± 6 (65 – 90). Pulse rate: 83 ± 11 (64 – 112). ECG: heart rate 66.5 ± 12, sinus arrhythmia in 16 (43%), sinus bradyarrhytmia in 8 (22%), extreme bradycardia in 1 case (3%), incomplete right bundle block in 6 (16%). Tall R wave in left leeds 7 (19%), elevation of the ST segment in V2-V4 leads 29 (78%), negative T wave in D3 in 4 (11%) cases. Only one case with negative T wave in left leads (3%): echocardiography suggested incipient fibroelastosis of endocardium, but rentgenogram and graded exercise test were normal. Conclusion: The values of blood pressure and hearth rate are within the standards of growth curves. The frequent changes in ECG, already known and well described by other autors, can be interpreted as physiological variations. The only case of fibroelastosis in early stage also had changes of the other cardiac parameters, which confirms the necessity of regular cardiac check-up of athlets.
