Sažetak
The current researches suggested that wide spread habit of drinking coffee could affect homocysteine levels. The aim of the study was to examine the effect of coffee consumption on plasma homocysteine levels in the group of Croatian women. Participants were 174 women aged 45-65, recruited as the part of scientific project “Diet, homocysteine and bone health“. Information on coffee consumption was provided by self-administered questionnaire. Fasting venous blood samples were drawn for estimation of total plasma homocysteine concentrations. Homocysteine was determined using Abbott AxSYM systems, according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Exactly one third of all participants drink no coffee or only one cup of coffee every day, and the most participants drink between 2-3 cups of coffee per day (59.2%). Mean plasma homocysteine level was higher in participants who reported consuming higher quantities of coffee, ranging from 9.48 μmol/L in participants who consumed 0-1 cups of coffee/day to 15.68 μmol/L in participants who consumed more than 5 cups of coffee/day. There was statistically significant difference at the p<0.05 level in homcysteine level for the 4 groups of participants divided according to amount of coffee consumed per day. The results of the study added to the body of evidence suggesting that coffee consumption, (especially amounts higher than 1L unfiltered coffee/day) have homocysteine increasing effect, but population sample should be enlarged in further investigation and the type of coffee consumed should be defined more precise.
