Sažetak
This paper presents the results of measurements of sulphur dioxide, smoke, total suspended particulate matter, metals lead, cadmium and manganese in total suspended particulate matter, PM10, nitrogen dioxide, and ozone in seven Croatian towns with an ongoing air quality surveillance. The results refer to the entire period in each town where the surveillance has been performed. The surveillance of air quality started in Croatia in 1962 with the measurement of deposited matter. A network for SO2 and smoke measurement was installed in 1965, for total suspended particulate matter (TSP) and its content on heavy metals in 1972, for NO2 in 1994, for ozone in 1996, and for PM10 in 1998. The surveillance in Zagreb are run by the Institute for Medical Research and Occupational Health and have been operating continuously. Since the early seventies, the surveillance of air pollution has gradually developed in other Croatian towns performed by local Institutes of Public Health. The presented data are only from one site in each situated in the city centre with heavy traffic. The paper also gives a categorization of the towns by air quality in accordance with the Law on Air Quality Protection in Croatia and the Ordinance on Recommended and Limit Air Quality Values. Only SO2 and smoke were measured in all seven towns and air quality has greatly improved from polluted air to clean air in all towns over the years of measuring. Air in Croatian towns, in which surveillance has been performed, was moderately polluted with SPM, PM10 and NO2 . Levels of lead, cadmium and manganese in SPM and ozone were very low during the whole surveillance period. Croatian towns follow trends similar to those in other European countries.
