Sažetak
The study presents preliminary results of observation of the Gomphonema capitatum/truncatum complex in Macedonia. This complex has rarely been a subject of a thorough taxonomic investigation in the area. Many taxa have previously been identified as Gomphonema truncatum Ehrenberg or Gomphonema capitatum Ehrenberg. Even though the identification of these species is considered fairly easy, a considerable variability within the complex was evident. In accordance, not all taxa correspond to either G. truncatum or G. capitatum and many diatom populations consist of several independent taxa within the whole cluster forms. Nine taxa that included to this complex have been identified from Macedonia: (G. truncatum Ehrenberg, G. laticollum Reichart, G. italicum Kützing, G.capitatum Ehrenberg, G. macedonicum Hustedt, G. olivaceum var. capitatum Jurilj, Gomphonema sp.1, Gomphonema sp2 and Gomphonema sp. 3). Three of these do not fit within known Gomphonema taxa and most probably are new species. All observed taxa have been analyzed by light and scanning electron microscopy. Gomphonema sp. 1 is most similar to Gomphonema clava, but differs by the more pronounced constriction of the head pole. Gomphonema sp. 2 resembles G. laticollum Reichard, nevertheless it can be distinguished by valve size and the shape of the head pole. Gomphonema sp. 3 differs from G. laticollum Reichard and Gomphonema sp. 2, by the valve shape(narrow head pole and tumid mid-valve). Taxa belonging to this complex have been observed from a variety of habitats, from ancient lakes (Lake Ohrid and Dojran), high mountain peat bogs, as well as springs and streams. The findings of large number of taxa from this complex in Macedonia indicate the existence of at least several unknown Gomphonema taxa, which most probably represent new species.
